Street Food Galore! Super Easy - Nasi Goreng!






Hey from EL The Cook! We embark on an Indonesian street food quest!

Nasi goreng, literally meaning "fried rice" in Indonesian and Malay, and can refer simply to fried pre-cooked rice or aromatic pan fried rice.

Colourful and vibrant, Nasi Goreng infuses aromatic and simple ingredients, to form a seamless dish. From high class dinner parties to tin plates at a roadside stall, Nasi Goreng is a remarkably adaptive dish.

Nasi goreng has been called the national dish of Indonesia, and is included in the list of 50 most delicious foods!

Today we make a quick, flavoursome street food version which can easily be made at home. 



Cook Time - (30 minutes)

INGREDIENTS ( Serves 4)

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 spring onions, finely sliced.
  • 1 sweet carrots, diced
  • 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoons fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice from 1 lime
  • 1 tablespoon sweet chili sauce
  • 2 teaspoons freshly minced garlic (about 2 medium cloves)
  • 25gm freshly chopped coriander
  • 1/4 cup oil for frying
  • 250 gm boneless chicken breasts, sliced into 1/2-inch strips lengthwise
  • 3 eggs lightly beaten.


KITCHEN EQUIPMENT:
  • Chefs Knife
  • Large Wok
  • Spatula
  • Serving platters
  • 1 large bowl
  • 1 medium cooking vessel

METHOD: 

  • Cook rice in a medium cooking vessel, with salt water, until just al dente.
  • Empty rice in a serving platter and cool for 15 minutes.
  • Combine soy sauce and sweet chili sauce in a small bowl and keep aside
  • Heat a wok over high heat until hot. Add 1 teaspoon oil and swirl to coat. Add one-quarter of beaten egg and swirl to form a thin omelette. Cook for 30 seconds or until egg sets. Slide onto a board. Repeat with oil and egg, in 3 batches, to make 4 omelettes. Roll up omelettes and thinly slice crossways.
  • Heat remaining oil in wok over high heat. Add some spring onion, garlic, fish sauce and carrot. Stir-fry for 1 minute or until aromatic. Add chicken. Stir-fry for 1 to 2 minutes or until sealed. Add rice, soy mixture, spring onions . Stir-fry for 3 to 4 minutes or until rice is heated through. Toss through half the sliced omelette.
  • Spoon nasi goreng onto serving plates. Top with remaining sliced omelette, chopped coriander and lime juice and lime wedges.
