Restaurant Review : The Deccan Epicure, Pune
Hey from EL The Cook!
We review, locally inspired, international cuisine presented by The Deccan Epicure, Pune. The restaurant located in a peaceful by-lane of the bustling Viman-nagar, is a welcome refreshment.
The owner Kevin is a vivid restauranter, with experience in the hospitality sector in Australia! Head-Chef, David, the local boy, has exemplary food knowledge and loves to push the boundaries of local cuisine!
Clean and crisp interiors are only accentuated by the large, modern kitchen. Ambient lighting helps your food experience even more!
FORAGE THROUGH THE DECCAN
Foraging through the Deccan, is a spectacular dish, visually. Chef David, explores ingredients famous along the deccan plateau. Colors accentuate the plate with the burgundy of the amaranth leaves interlaced with pearly white of the cheese and topped with the fresh green of the sorrel.
Like a walk in the forests of the western ghats, this dish, leaves your palette astounded with the depth of flavor. The wholesome ragi pancakes, stuffed with cheese and fenugreek leaves are complimented wonderfully by the luscious balsamic glaze.
The dish adds a hint of theater with its crisp amaranth leaves and mild tang of the green sorrel.
A lovely organic blend of flavors, supremely executed on the plate!
WILD MUSHROOM SOUP WITH TRUFFLE OIL
The local mushrooms available along the Western Ghats, offer and almost unexplored variety of flavors. The Deccan Epicure makes full use of these wild offerings and combines it with the classic (but expensive) french ingredient, truffles!
The resulting fusion of flavor is a smooth, comforting sip into the earthiness of the forest!
ORANGE AND HONEY PORK RIBS
Gluttony!! The Deccan Epicure serves up this outrageously good looking dish.
Succulent pork ribs cooked to perfection and given a caramelizy sear. The ribs are then smeared with a gorgeous orange, tangy glaze!
The pork, slips of the bone without the least bit of friction. The meat is beautifully prepared and the flavor on the palette is rich and almost unforgettable!
CHICKEN AND MUSHROOM LASAGNE
Fresh pasta is always inviting. With something that looks as good as that, we'll keep asking for more!
The chicken and mushroom lasagne, served at the Deccan Epicure, could quite easily be confused for one served out of a classic Italian kitchen. The fresh pasta is enveloped by layers of creamy mushroom bechamel and a lovely chicken mince cooked in a homely red sauce.
Together they make a fantastic combination which as they say in Italian, molto delizoso!
SAFFRON AND VANILLA PANNACOTTA
The Deccan Epicure, does finish well with their desserts, something which few Pune restaurants do well (Of course you have to have the stomach for it after all that delicious food!)
Pannacotta is perhaps one of the toughest desserts to get right, because foodies want their distinctive wobble!
The Deccan Epicure, provides us with just what we wanted! Adding a distinct Indian touch with its hints of saffron and fresh vanilla bean.
The depth of flavor is brilliant. The right amount of sweetness is complimented by the slight bitterness and tang of the orange syrup, giving you that marmalady feel on the outside but comforting creamy vanilla texture on the inside!
A dessert to die for!
The Deccan Epicure, is pushing the boundaries of local cuisine by exploring unique local ingredients and transforming them into abstract art on a plate.
With Chef David keen to learn and use the freshest local ingredients in his food, The Deccan Epicure will only thrive among many restaurants looking to put Pune's local cuisine on the map.
